Lisa Jorgenson and George Madison simultaneously face major life altering events. Thirty-one year old Lisa, long the emotional center of the national Softball USA women's team, is cut as she was hitting the twilight of her playing life without she even realizing it. As such, she made no plans, like many of her teammates, for her post-softball life, she, not knowing what to do, mimicking the path of the other players without any thought if it's what she really wants. As a team member, she attended therapy because it was offered as a team perk, and although stating that she didn't believe in it, she has ended up over-analyzing everything arguably because of what she learned in therapy. George, a high powered executive in his father Charles Madison's company, is a straight up kind of guy who would not knowingly do something wrong. It is in his misassumption that others, including his colleagues, also do the right thing that he learns he is being investigated for securities fraud, his only wrongdoing being trusting his colleagues. Due to the legalities, the Board of the company recommends not only not having contact with George, but not providing him with information concerning their internal machinations in dealing with the investigation and not providing him any in-house legal counsel, with only his father and his loyal secretary, Annie, standing by him, albeit necessarily from a distance. It is because of George's problems and her own self-interest that George's girlfriend breaks-up with him, the break-up just after they decided to take their relationship to the next level. It is under these circumstances, arguably the worst day in their respective lives, that Lisa and George meet on a delayed and what turns out to be a disastrous blind date. However, in his emotional agony over his legal problems, George sees something special in Lisa. The next time George and Lisa meet in unexpectedly running into each other, Lisa has ended up entering into a relationship with Washington Nationals pitcher Matty Reynolds. While Matty is outwardly caring, he also is insensitive and immature, probably the result of living in the bubble of his life of wealth and fan adulation. Lisa is able to justify one insensitive comment or action by Matty after another in her analyzing the situation after the fact. George tries to remain a part of Lisa's life in he slowly falling for her, she the only bright spot in his life, while Lisa enjoys George's company especially as a respite from problems with Matty. Granted, I'm a fan of Paul Rudd. He's great here. Maybe the best he's ever been.
My local video store is going out of business. They're reducing DVD's down to 1.99 in effort to blow out 16,000 titles. With these actors - who could go wrong, right? 5.3? Here's where I get sidetracked. I don't think this is a great movie. But, when crap films like Take Me Home Tonight(6.4) and Fool's Gold(5.4) are ranked higher - I just had to write a review.
I didn't even remember a theatrical release - so my assumption was that this movie was going to flat-out stink. So much for my umption.
It really is Paul Rudd's 'down on his luck' performance that made this all work. He wears his emotions on his sleeve here, and doesn't need or have a whole lot of dialog to convey that to the audience.
Owen Wilson basically reprises his role in the 'Meet the Parents' Trilogy - only this time he's a baseball pitcher/sexist-pig that is trying to change his evil ways to earn the love of Witherspoon.
I also liked the movie because it was funny, and a good watch with the other half. Better than most in the genre. I wouldn't say that Witherspoon and Rudd had a lot of on screen chemistry, but that's exactly how the roles are written here - they don't. They meet at a time in their lives when there is no possibility of chemistry. I guess you could say the lack of chemistry was the chemistry. I know that sounds weird, but if you see the film you will understand.
There were many memorable scenes.
I mentioned the film wasn't perfect. Reese doesn't exactly scream a Softball star physically, and the film slightly overstays its' welcome at just over 2 hours. Every softball scene should and could have been cut and left on the editing floor. That's probably my biggest gripe with the film. Take out those meaningless, emotionless 15 minutes and this would hold-up much better. It's as predictable as most every Rom-Com, and Nicholson's presence here doesn't really add to much in terms of quality - even though his character is integral to the storyline.
All that said, How Do You Know" is a solid Rom-Com with heart and laughs, highlighted by a fantastic performance from Paul Rudd.
Tighten up the photography and cut the softball scenes and this is a solid 8. As it stands I'd give it 64/100 and nearly nudged it to 7 because of the undeserved low-rating here.
Well worth 1.99 or any rental fee. One the best Rom-Coms since Forgetting Sarah Marshall(granted - it's a pretty weak genre. But, this deserves a higher rating.

On the Brooks totem pole this is about even with Spanglish. a notch below As Good As it Gets and a big step below Terms of Endearment. I fear Rudd's performance here will shamefully go unnoticed. Those expecting a huge comedy are obviously not familiar with Brooks' work.
Take it from a trusted reviewer - You can ignore any scores/reviews over 8 or under 4 on this one. All the short-comings are more than made up for by Kathryn Hahn and Paul Rudd's SPOT-ON performances.
